What are France's Gun laws?

  • How does one obtain a gun in France? What checks and barriers do you have to do through to obtain a gun in France? What are the limitations, if any? Please provide links to support your answer. Thanks.

  • Answer:

France permits personal possession of a limited quantity of firearms per individual, but automatic weapons and most semi-automatic weapons are not permitted. Only properly licensed individuals over 18 years of age can own firearms, and this is done according to the principle of genuine reason (proving why you need a gun) and generally involves a prolonged waiting period and a  thorough background check. Licenses must be reinstated every few years. Depending on the type of weapon, the quantity of ammunition an individual can purchase is limited per annum. Further licensing can allow for carrying concealed firearms in public. http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/france http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politics#France

Curtis answer is right for serious guns, but for hunting gear, this is not that tight. A simple registration in a state office (Préfecture) is enough and as far as I know there's no "thorough background check" in this case.
