What is modular programming?

What do you think about the programming culture at IIIT Hyderabad?

  • IIIT Hyderabad is known for its programming culture. What is your opinion about it? Is it not as seriously widespread in the student community as it should be? Or is it that programming overshadows ( in terms of popularity and 'bondness', IIITians will get what I am trying to say.) other important aspects of computer science. edit: While chatting with some of my friends at IIIT-H, I got an impression that there are only a few good programmers and most of the other 'coders' are just 'wannabe-bonds.' ( I think that this 'bond' thing has something to do with the IIIT lingo). IIIT has been consistently producing ACM-ICPC world finalists for the past few years. The performance by IIIT teams at ICPC regionals has also been very good. However, the conversation with my friends left me wondering if such good results were a result of luck and large numbers (20 teams from one college! ). As far as over-shadowing other areas of computer science, I felt that students tend to take up programming as a hobby because of the 'faster-access-to -fame' + 'easier-adrenaline rush'. ( I know the feeling that one gets when his profile does a 'red-shift' on topcoder or spoj goes green! ) I have tried to explain the context in which I have asked the question. I would like to know what most of the students at IIIT think when then think of programming as a hobby. Please do not hesitate to answer outside the boundaries set by this question. I am really curious because whenever programming is mentioned in India, the name IIIT always comes up ( at least in colleges). Many college students will blindly follow what is being done in IITs and IIITs, especially in the areas of programming ( being good at this can give you jobs!). So I think that understanding the culture at IIIT will be important.

On a personal level, I do programming because I enjoy it. I share same feeling when programming as a child playing cricket . He is not doing it because he want to become Sachin Tendulkar one day(not that, he would reject becoming one.) And I believe same is the reason for most of the people here. If someone is not enjoying it why would he do it for long? I hope this clarifies your doubt.
