What can I do with a Neuroscience degree but no medical school?

I got a computer science degree and want to go to grad school eventually in computational neuroscience. Would it hurt my chances at admission to work as a software engineer for a few years?

  • Answer:

It shouldn't.  I worked for a year in before I got my master's and a year before I entered my current Ph.D. program.  Be advised, though, that many people find it difficult to go back to school after being in the workforce, having more-or-less predictable hours, and making real money.  You also might want to consider how old you'll be when you get your Ph.D.  It would greatly help your chances if you could somehow work on some research-related projects in the mean time. This won't matter matter to some people, but if you start your Ph.D. at 30, you'll be probably be 35 before you graduate.

Make sure you build your profile in parallel. You could do some self research, gain knowledge and experience. There is no definite answer to your question as it depends on the university you are applying to. Many people feel their interest towards doing a higher education fades once they start earning. So, make sure that doesn't happen. Never lose your focus and consult an expert on these matters before taking a decision.
