How long does it take to become a sports scientist?

I am an engineering undergrad and I would like to become a data scientist. Is it possible to take up a career as a data scientist by myself, or do I need a master's degree?

  • I have signed up in Kaggle. I am planning to take up a few courses in Coursera. I am good at aptitude tests.

A2A, so here goes: Dima Korolev makes a good point. I have a different perspective to add to his. The demand for Data Scientists is not as much as for Software Engineering. Based on Facebook, I would peg the demand to be roughly equivalent to the demand for Product Managers, which is a notoriously difficult area to break into. So unless you have an Under-grad from a top-5 school in the US in CS or Stats, you will find it hard to differentiate yourself and get an interview. My suggestion would be to do an MS-CS specializing in AI but also take some interesting Statistics courses. On the other hand, if you are an outlier and consistently keep coming within the top-3 in Kaggle competitions, I am sure you would find some interesting opportunities.

Other answers

Yes, it is possible to go for a Data Scientist career without the Masters. No, I would not recommend it. Of all software- and data-related careers, data science may well be the one where having the right fundamentals helps the most.
