What is it like to be a mathematics PhD student at NYU?

  • Answer:

I think it's a great experience. As with most PhD programs, you take a few classes and read many papers. There are also plenty of research-level seminars, and the emphasis of the program is definitely research. As a person interested in areas like mathematical physics and analysis, I find the program to be a good fit for me personally. The environment is generally friendly, and if I had to choose one thing I feel sets Courant apart it would be that the department is rather interdisciplinary. There is a visible interaction between people on the pure side of math and those in applied areas. To me it's really a two-way street. From time to time purely abstract developments have a concrete impact on applications; and, if you pay attention, you can find interesting mathematical structure in very applied settings.
