What do French people think of other French speaking countries?

Indo-Iranian: What do young people in Iran think about India and Indians?

  • There is a considerable amount of interaction between Indians and the people of countries to its east like Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. However, looking towards the west, Iran doesn't really register much among the Indian youth(does Pakistan act as a wall?). As far as general perception is considered, it is grouped along with the Arabs as a generic West Asian country (may not hold for the more religious Muslims, though). This makes me wonder about what our counterparts in Iran think about us. PS - Personally speaking, having read a bit about Iran, its people and its history, I am really fascinated by the country.

Since I grew up in Canada, and then moved back to Iran, I maybe a little biased and little uninformative. But since I was asked to answer this question I am taking a shot at it. As an Iranian in Canada I faced many Indians on a daily basis. The youth are among the most intellectual people I have met, especially when it came to post secondary education. They are hard working, dedicated, and really helpful. And this feeling was mutual among all other Iranians toward Indian youth. When I think about Indian youth, I have an image in my head, hard working individuals, who make great engineers, have a great knack for software development, and deep down their parents want all of them to be doctors :). They have deep family connections and their culture and heritage is very important to them. Now, for Iranian youth in Iran it self, the feeling is somewhat similar, I run into Indians here at least once a month, again same qualities are seen here. As for India itself, I believe it to be a very exotic place and a must see country in a life time. It is among the list of destinations I would like to visit before I kick the bucket. Hope that helped.

I already responded to this. India is like a cousin to Iran. I have an old story to tell:The King of Persia Khorsow Anusheravan sent his most trusted advisor Bozorgh Mehr to India to find the elixir of immortality. Bozorg Mehr returned and told Anusheravan that he did not find the elixir of immortality but instead found the game of Chess which was then called “Chuturanga”. The game has been with us since that day.

As an Iranian, I think of Indians as our Aryan Brothers who branched off and migrated east. Before the Arab invasion of Iran and the coming of Islam, both the countries had cordial relations. Even after the coming of Islam the only blot in the relationship between our two countries was Nadir Shah’s invasion of India in 1739Zoroastrianism which is one of the world's oldest monotheistic religions and originated in Iran has many similarities to Indian-Hinduism including fire worship.Zoroastrianism and Hinduism have close resemblances. For example Both the religions worship fire god, Both have religious languages are sound alike. Both Teachings agree that Ahura/Asura and Daeva/Deva both were Celestial Beings and later one of the group would then be casted out- Similar with God & Satan in Christianity isn't it? For Hinduism, Deva remained Gods & Asura were the casted out group because of their greediness and wildness. On the Other Hand, Zoroastrianism Ahura was the God and the Daevas were casted out because bringing evil thoughts in Humans, Both respects the sacred plant juice [ Haoma (Zoroastrianism) & Soma (Hinduism)] and both Religions says it was drunk by the Celestial beings in both the religions. The prayers in both the religions involve burning incense, chanting Mantra.I have recently started taking interest in the pre-Islamic past of my country after visiting the city of Yazd. The architecture of the ancient fire temple in that city captivated my imagination. Here is the picture of that temple: I am a liberal Iranian educated in the USA who is a Shia by faith but I like to learn more about the pre-Islamic history of my country under various emperors like Cyrus and Darius. The Parsi who are descendents of ancient Iranians and are now settled in India also use coconuts and. grains of rice during their Navjyot and wedding ceremonies just like the Hindus.I would love to visit India and tour many cities like Mumbai, Agra and New Delhi and I hope to make many Indian friends on Quora.

Iranians typically feel very close to Indians, both culturally and genealogically. Let me cover the points you have mentioned: Iranians are not really upset by the attack of Nader Shah, as it is only one of the few offensives the Persian empire has launched, so they are kind of proud of it too! There are still plenty of Zoroastrians in Iran. However, the Parsi community is not tied directly to them, as the Parsi community is much more influenced by the Hindu culture. Did you know that Khomeini, the supreme leader who did 1979 revolution, was from India? I don't think Iran supplied weapons to Pakistan as you claim. Maybe they did for the fight against Taliban, but Iran does not hold a position towards Kashmir. There is almost no influence of Bollywood in Iran. I have no idea what kabaddi is! Iran's relations with India are so-so, mostly because India has good western relationships. The Hindu-Muslim problems are typically because of Sunnis. Iran does not endorse Sunni activity. Iranians consider themselves as Aryans, but I'm not sure whether they consider Indians Aryans as well.

No special feeling. A Land with a thousand different religious beliefs, an old and interesting culture(s), and overcrowded. There aren’t many Indians in Iran so most Iranians don’t have a specific opinion on Indians.

As an Iranian, my feeling is positive about India. They really have a great country, I know a lot of indians, they are warm and hard working. Their county is diverse(culture, language, religion) and they respect all these cultures in India. I read somewhere that India is going to beat super powers like china and us in future. They have a bright future. My uncle visited a lot of countries and India is his favourite(he visited 30 years ago).I noticed that their language borrowed so many words from farsi.Indian films were popular in Iran(Shah Rukh Khan).Their prime minister is in Iran right now.The only thing that I don’t like about India is that they have very rich/poor people. The gap is huge and I think this may make problems for India in future.

As an Iranian I consider Indians out cousins due to the great cultural exchange we have had with each other. We like Indians regardless of their religion. India gave refuge to the zoroastrian Parsi community during the arab invasion. Religious Iranians know that there are 40 million Shia muslims in India, making it the second biggest begind Iran. We have the same roots (truth with modifications) the Aryan people who settled in Iran and India- sharing many linguistic elements.  Indian culture is very diverse vibrant, overall a beautiful country.

In some respects, we have a lot in common. We both eat rice as a meal and abuse tea for our daily uses. Many Iranians love bollywood so much so that they won't watch anything else. We have a channel that its work is basically dub Indian movies and show them, though I'm not a fan.We respect Indians, we are fascinated by their culture and we find their attitude towards life as a goal. Now that I'm thinking of it, it's very fascinating that we have so much "Indian"  in our culture, and I've never faced with a person who holds an strong opinion towards them. I think we would get along really well :)

I think Iranians feel very close to Indians, because we are neighbor countries, we share some cultural properties (like we both value family a lot), we have some similar words (I heard some in Indian movies), both Iranians and Indians love happy music and dance, we both are not completely white, usually have dark hair, etc.Iranians specially like Indian movies, specially the cheerful parts of singing and dancing. The problem with India is the huge gap between poor and rich.

As an Indian who has never been to Iran, I can safely assume that they think of us the same way as we think of them which is NOTHING.  They will probably think of us as humans,  I guess or that we dance around trees just like in hindi movies.
