How do non profit organizations work?

If I want a job that makes the world a better place, where is the most effective type of work - in politics or in non-profit organizations?

  • I know this is such a general question.  Some of my other thoughts are that perhaps it is best to work in local politics to start small in supporting the passing of bills that help my community, or maybe I should focus my limited efforts on something more urgent, like helping a non-profit that does work to help Africa, etc.  I know there is waste and corruption everywhere.  I am curious to hear from people in both politics and non-profits as to which is generally most effective at relieving suffering and improving the quality of life for people.  I am guessing non-profits?

    Become a doctor - I've worked for a couple political entities and they're always more concerned with helping themselves than others. It's really quite sad, but totally across the board. If you want to help people, politics is as far from your goal as you can get, at least in America, anyways. Sorry.

Why not start your own non-profit? Granted, starting a NPO isn't for everyone, but if you want to make the greatest impact then figure out what cause you are most passionate about and then start an organization to help you reach your end goal of making a positive change in that cause. If you're truly passionate, you will find others to help you build the organization along the way.

I've worked in the non profit/government joint venture arena before as a lowly intern. I can tell you it really depends on the end goal of what the organization is trying to solve, and whether or not you trust the management team to lead the way.
