Is the Isleworth Mona Lisa really by Leonardo da Vinci?
-
The "Mona Lisa Foundation" claims that there is a second version of the Mona Lisa. What is the evidence for and against?
-
Answer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isleworth_Mona_Lisa has a good discussion on the authenticity of the painting. It is not uncommon for artists to do multiple versions of a work before finishing the final piece, and for the time, it was not uncommon for an artist's studio of apprentices to produce copies of works (or do portions of whatever the artist himself was working on). So it's complicated in ways that will make determining provenance extremely difficult.
