What is the difference between M.Tech and M.S?

What is the difference between MS from US university and Integrated dual degree (BTech + MTech) from an IIT? I want to take a PhD course in US from Computer Science, Do I have to take some extra courses as these universities do not recognize Dual Degree as a masters degree?

  • Answer:

Who said those universities don't consider dual degrees as equivalent to Master's degrees? Some US universities even offer PhD to BS holders directly. I got my PhD like that after a BTech in ME from IITM. Of course, CSE in our university didn't have the BS-PhD program, but I knew of a dual degree student (some years senior) who was doing PhD there. As far as I know, all US universities consider the dual degree program equivalent to a BS+MS degree. Some even have an integrated 5-year BS/MS program themselves. I'd be highly surprised if there are any which do not recognize the degree by now, especially when you get both the certificates from an IIT. But if you want to play it safe, email the graduate programs of the CS departments universities you want to apply to with this point specifically before even applying. All the best in your application process.

They highly recognize our degrees from IIT. There's no doubt about it. Infact having a dual degree is advantageous: In some universities you may even get directly into a PhD program, whereas few may still enroll you into a MS+PhD (longer duration). Regarding extra courses: If you want to have certain specialization in your field, then yes you can take courses, so that while applying for PhD you can show your interest through this(you can do relevant projects-interests-papers too). I believe most appropriate thing you can do now is: 1. Consult your seniors in US doing PhD 2. Contact graduate program coordinators of CS department in each university
