Where to find jobs with companies hiring?

Why do some companies shun away from hiring "job hoppers"? Is there anything that can be done to change their minds?

  • In light of the need (at least in the Silicon Valley) to hire brilliant people, some companies refuse to talk to candidates if they have more than a certain number of jobs within a given time period without thinking twice. These individuals may have done that due to necessity (they couldn't find a full time job), they liked the ability to work at different places, or even wanted to obtain new skills to make them more marketable. What can an individual do to, at the very least, get a conversation going with a hiring manager at a company to demonstrate/prove interest in a Full Time/Permanent opportunity instead of staying a "permatemp"?

  • Answer:

So-called "Job Hopping" can also be due to the start-ups or small companies one worked for, going out of business. I don't think the "brilliant people" argument holds water. An employer is going to make an investment in you, and is going to become dependent on you in some ways. If the employer feels like you're job-jumping, that investment isn't worthwhile. If you want to get the conversation going, explain why it will be different this time: why won't you jump? what would a job have to be, to keep you from jumping?

The reason why employers tend to vie away from job-hoppers is because they feel as though the applicant is not capable of being loyal, and their habit of jumping from one job to another can cause their attrition rate to go high. And this is something a company does not want. If you're a job-hopper and you really want to get into a company (and mean it, of course), you have to assure the employer that you've changed and you're really willing to move forward in your career. If you want this to reflect on your resume, professional help might be needed.
