How do I start a career in finance?

How can I start a career in finance with an undergraduate degree without going into investment banking?

  • Answer:

Investment banking is only one part of the financial industry. Yes, IB gets all the spotlight but that doesn't mean there aren't other jobs out there. Here are others: insurance, commercial banking, consumer banking, microfinance, back office, middle office operations, custody, asset management, private equity, hedge funds, research firms, consulting, and many more. I probably missed some, but it's a big industry. IB is popular but it's not the be all end all.

Join the finance department of a corporation, or a commercial bank. Investment banking is just one part of the finance industry at large.

A good alternative to IB is consulting (at a big firm), Sales and Trading and maybe auditing. If you want to make big money (I assume you do that is why you are in finance). I agree there is a lot a lot of different careers in finance but most of them won't lead you to the highest paying jobs. It is like a launch pad where you will meet other like minded individuals who are equally bright and ambitious. After all your are the average of 5 people around you. Another point about IB is you will meet many buy side and sell side firms that will potentially offer you a job down the road (you work a lot of PE clients and big corporations). I know investment banking is not the ONLY way to get anywhere in finance but if you have the chance, I suggest you do it.
