How to fool an IP address Tracer into believing another IP address?

How accurate/precise is geographical location data from IPv4 tracking services?

  • Or more precisely, what factors determine IP location tracking accuracy and precision? I'm thinking specifically of services like http://www.ip-tracker.org/

  • Answer:

Geo-location services for IP addresses were based on geo-location data provided to the registrar by the service provider  (who "owns" the IP address) at the time of allocation. It is typically linked to HQ address or billing address.  Take Google for instance.  Most of their IP address space shows up as California but they have deployed it all over the world.  Some services/devices have accounted for these mega allocations that have been dispersed to different locales but there are instances where you get bad results as a result of multi-location service providers. When deploying applications for clients that rely on geo-location services based on source IP address, we tend to tell clients to expect 80% accuracy depending on who the source IP's are coming from.  Mileage may vary. http://jamiebusic.us/about-jamie-busic/
