What are the chances that if I have extra luggage, that I'll be able to get them in as checked baggage with no extra fees due to the flight being a full flight?

It seems that more than half of all flights are full flights that request customers to check in extra baggage. And it's not hard to find out which ones are full right before one's flight.

Answer:
It depends on the airline. If you tried that on a low cost carrier like Ryanair or Easyjet, you'd either be charged a fortune or denied boarding and forfeit your ticket. On Spirit, you'd pay more as a carry on than checked! On Virgin Atlantic, even on an incredibly expensive full fare business class ticket, they won't let you take a standard rollaboard as carryon (that's the single reason I never fly Virgin Atlantic). However, on a US legacy carrier (United, American, etc), this has a good chance of working with the limitation that you can likely only take one suitcase and a "personal item" past security, and that the suitcase be no bigger than a 22" rollaboard. So it might save you the fee for one checked bag on those airlines.

Go down to Heathrow Terminal 3 when a flight to Nigeria (and certain other places) is departing. It's instructive to watch how people come through the door with one pile, pitch up at checkin with a different (still enormous) pile, argue about excess fees, repack, argue some more, repack leaving some things out, argue, pay some money, complete checkin then approach security with so much "hand baggage" it makes a joke of standard passenger weights. More importantly the fact that many airlines make a lot of money out of baggage fees means they have become very focused on making sure those fees get collected meaning it's much more difficult to 'get away with it'. In such circumstances the question of whether the flight is full or not is irrelevant - baggage is now a profit centre.
