When are CCTV useful and how are they generally used?

Why isn't CCTV used for baggage belts at airports?

  • If a camera was pointed at where the bags are loaded onto the belt, monitors in the arrival hall could alert passengers that their bag is now on its way. Dead simple solution. This way it wouldn't be necessary for anxious passengers to stand and watch closely and block both acces and view, but you could sit down and wait or stand at a distance, only to come forward when you have seen your own bag on its way. Since CCTV systems are rather cheap, why haven't I seem this yet in all the many airports I have been to?

  • Answer:

Why not?   Well, the existing system may be flawed but it works.   Too many companies (and on a wider scale industries) work on that principle. Actually, if I was going to implement something I would use the existing bag tags.   They get read on the way into the aircraft so why not on the way out?   You could then display the passenger name to call them forward. Too many bags look the same to be properly distinguishable on CCTV.   Even with my idea I'm not convinced people would learn to stay back until the bag is on the way.

Actually on a flat conveyor I feel the distance between the Point at which bag is loaded on the conveyor and the First visible point outside is not much. So IMHO it may not make a big difference. In the new type of belts where your Bag POPS up from underground and then comes on a full Visible circle slanted conveyor the above Idea makes sense.
