What is the environmental impact of LED/LCD printers?

What are good printers to replace an Okidata impact printer with?

  • I'm working with a small business that prints invoices and tickets using Okidata impact printers (there are several different models, one is an Okidata Microline 395). My question is, is there a good replacement option for these printers and what are they?

  • Answer:

Figure out your criteria. I would ask what sizes paper you need to print on (to find which tray configuration you need) and what your print volume is (to estimate your consumable usage costs) to decide which model to get. Inkjet ink can smudge pretty badly if handled too soon after printing, and monochrome laser's are quite affordable.

The first thing to determine is whether you still need an impact printer. The most common reason would be printing multipart forms. These are usually carbonless sandwich forms with 2, 3, or more sheets that are all printed at once. If your work flow needs those forms, you will be shopping for another impact printer, probably a dot matrix. I haven't used them for 30 years, so I can't recommend current models, but you can find them online at http://walmart.com, http://bestbuy.com, and Amazon. You might even find them in some stores, but you will find more variety online. If you don't need an impact printer, there are lots of options in both ink and laser printers. To recommend one of them, I would need more details on what and how much you print. One generic bit of advice: If you print very little, getting a small, cheap printer makes a lot of sense. The cartridges are cheaper, but they don't last as long. However, since you aren't printing much, it doesn't make much difference. If you are printing a lot, consider moving to a bigger, more expensive printer. The cartridges will cost more, but they will last much longer. The cost of printing each page on a bigger printer can be less than half that on a smaller printer.
