'Introduction to Probability Models' by Sheldon Ross is an amazing book to take you through the basics and at the same time deal, in more detail, with statistical methods that are closer to machine learning than others (Bayesian methods for instance). If you have time for more than just skimming a book, try watching these lectures http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/6-041-probabilistic-systems-analysis-and-applied-probability-fall-2010/
