Is there a way to treat Hypoglycemia?

What is the healthiest way to treat hypoglycemia?

  • I'm a Type I Diabetic who is currently trying to eat as well as possible. Most nutritional advice I've read has agreed that it's important to avoid refined sugar and processed food. This means most of my carbs are either complex (as in whole grains), or simple but with fiber (as in whole fruit). This is fine and I'm happy eating it, but when I'm hypoglycemic I need the opposite of most dietary advice, i.e., the higher GI the better to get my blood sugar up. What is the healthiest way to treat this? Is this simple sugar unavoidable? Is it more important to treat the hypoglycemia than to avoid simple sugar? Does GI/insulin response even matter since I control my own insulin?

  • Answer:

10-15 Gm of simple sugar... 1/2 cup (120ml) fruit juice, 1 Tbsp (15...

Depends on how low. Wake up middle of the night delirious low- I go for the 100% juice, 4oz- 15g-30g carb just to get me back on track. Followed by apple slices with peanut butter or crackers and peanut butter. Feel like I'm going low but I have time to spare (like I'm just chilling around the house) I'll have actual fruit, or apple with peanut butter or cheese, or make a smoothie, or have a yogurt.

If you are in a hypoglycemic reaction the healthiest thing to do is get your glucose levels up, soon. A few life savers or smarties or glucose tabs will do that and once you are back into safe levels you can then re-start your controlled eating. A couple of hours with glucose levels above your target are a lot less dangerous than a few minutes with glucose levels seriously below your target.

When I am low, I like to make sure that I stay alive and conscious before I worry about eating healthy. The hard part is to stop yourself from binging to treat hypoglycemia. If you are a type 1 like me, you would probably agree that you feel like eating everything in the fridge when a low wakes you up in the night. The trick is to know when to stop. 15/15 rule is generally a good idea.

The first thing we learned when my son was diagnosed with T1D was that if his blood glucose is low, it is a medical emergency and we must treat it. If we don't, he could slip into a coma and die. Definitely, treat your low with fast acting carbs. You can use Dex Tabs, Sugar, Honey, fruit juice, Skittles or some other candy. If you are experiencing a lot of lows you may need to evaluate your exercise, food intake, and insulin use. My son was going low before dinner every day, & it took us a while to figure out why. Let's face it, Diabetes is complicated. No two days are the same. Best wishes to you.

Glucose tables are the single healthiest way to treat hypoglycemia. Not only are they rapid-acting, they are also correlated with lower levels of weight gain, according to my endocrinologist.

Short term: glucose tablets because you know exactly how much carb you are getting.    Long term: Avoid hypoglycemia by minimizing blood sugar spikes and resultant insulin needs.  Large intake of carbohydrates results in large spike in blood glucose, and a large bolus of insulin to bring it down.  Smaller and consistent intakes of carbohydrate results in smaller insulin dosage and less likelihood of hypoglycemia.    End Result:  Lower insulin costs and reduced number of hypoglycemic episodes.   See my website and book coauthored by Type 1 physician:  http://www.ketogenic-diet-resource.com/treatment-for-diabetes.html

Some   healthy ways like Instead of three large meals a day, have six small meals,   which can help stabilize blood glucose levels throughout the day.Eat fewer   simple sugars (i.e., candy, sweets, sugar, honey) and more complex   carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates are found in foods such as bread,   cereals, pasta, rice, vegetables, and legumes (beans and peas). The body's   primary source of glucose comes from the breakdown of carbohydrates. At each   meal, consume foods high in protein, such as fish, poultry, meats, and dairy   products, such as low- or non-fat milk and cheese.Maintain a healthy body   weight by consuming a healthy diet and engaging in adequate exercise.

Fruit juice is the quickest way of raising blood sugar, but  it does  result in blood sugar spike, and it may take A LOT of fruit juce before  the dibetic feels like it was working.  Eating some longer acting carbohydrates with protein   after the  fruit juice is advisable as well. That includes eating fut , like an apple  or peach or  even corn or taco chips or , oh my god potato chips, potatoes or potato salad, or even,  pizza. Regular soda is NOT a good idea. because  you will rebound and then bounce back and forth like I used to. It  took me several days to stabilize.  I am NOT insulin resistant,  and that seems to be an exception.  I am NOT a health care professional, but 60.5 years of being a type 1 diabetic  should give me SOME  professional credibility simply because of 6 DECADES of VERY PERSONAL  life experience. I've manged to go ballistic in wrong without being able to TALK  almost 5 years ago.
