How do I get in the tech field?

How do I get some kind of paid job in a tech field that would allow me to use my MS in Applied Math degree? I got my MS 20 years ago and the only professional jobs I've held were teaching college physics and tutoring .

  • Answer:

No one's going to hire you based on your degree.  What people care about is your skillset--what you can do.  The first thing to ask is what you can do, and then find a company who wants someone to do that.

Look for a job in Operational Research. I spent 10 marvellous years as a professional mathematician in the UK coal industry. Having a Masters in Maths says more about the way you analyse problems and formulate solutions than it does about your ability to apply specific mathematical techniques.
