What are the job prospects in Biotechnology/Bioinformatics after graduation?

  • Final year student of B.E. Biotech. Acads: >70% Several projects and interns including an international summer fellowship Published papers and also papers currently in review at BMC, Human Mutations(wiley). My published one is in an Indian Journal, IPEJ. 2 papers currently in review one in BMC Dermatology and one in Human Mutations. I have two papers which are due communicating very soon maybe within 1 or 2 months. I am hopeful of further 1-2 papers in another 5-6 months. I was quite confused regarding the job prospects as I'm seriously not interested in academia/institutional research. However I find myself more inclined towards Entrepreneurship. There are very few jobs in india but are either sales or otherwise and not core. Also, the pay is not that great(~20-30k/month). Now, considering the poor job market for Biotechnology in India, should I consider going abroad for further studies(preferably PhD considering financial problems)? How good are the job prospects for a PhD in Biotech/Bioinfo outside india? US, UK, Germany, France, Singapore etc. I was thinking to take a gap year so as to complete my on-going works(Prediction of Druggable genes/proteins and PPIs using ML, database of all genetic variants associated with Ageing and Age-related disorders, a Pharmacogenomics LOVD DB for drug-associated mutations for Drugs used in Nervous Disorders) and communicate their respective papers. There has been more focus on Bioinformatics/Computational Biology in my projects and interns. I'm more interested in entrepreneurship rather than joining some company. Which are some of the better places for entrepreneur culture other than US and UK?

    If you have to ask, then civil services aren't for you. What's the impact factor (or impact score) of your earlier publications? Depending on that I think you can land at a good PhD position abroad. And if you do have the credentials you say you do. You should be able to get a decent job(keyword being decent). There are lots of excellent opportunities abroad. Dunno about UK but Sweden Germany and few European countries have excellent programs with minimal worry about finances.

Entrepreneurship if you want to do then you cant do Job But Please don't do that just because you are not getting job, do it because you want to create job for others. Biotech entrepreneurs are growing in India and are very well supported by the government of India. DBT and DST are funding them. There are VC and incubators for Biotechnologists Recently IIT Madras Launched a Biotech incubation program for their students So if you want to do it, Do it in India. It is the best market, though you might not get advanced technologies but I think you should focus on developing the affordable technologies for developing India. After B.Tech, you can obviously go for PhD but for that you require GATE in India. You didn't mention from which college you are pursuing and where you are carrying out your research activities Now Coming about Ph.D Prospects abroad. Somehow I feel you want to do PhD abroad as it is easy to be entrepreneur there. But Let me tell you my friend if you do that it is more difficult then it is in India right now. And moreover Once you are enrolled PhD abroad you will be accustomed to the technologies being used there and you would never like to come back to India and start your own company You will be thinking why I am saying so. I am a doctoral student and an entrepreneur in India. so in this regard I also had the same feelings at some point in my life If you dont want to do Job why are you asking for Job prospects Please make it very clear you want to do Job or Entrepreneurship and then make a decision
