It is amazing that I have finally found someone else whose has been harboring such an idea. Many aspirants are driven by a variety of motivations ranging from powerful social existence to all the 'upar ki kamai' that's supposed to shower upon you when you become a civil servant. But I guess there are only a few who actually give credence to the fact that ultimately an IAS officer is supposed to be a 'civil servant'. My sole motivation in deciding to prepare for civil services entrance (for which I plan to quit my job next June when the coaching season starts) is to set right things that have always seemed wrong to me. I have always been fascinated by the impact that a person like a DM has on the way things function in her/his district. I certainly understand that the idealist in me could be disillusioned if I actually get to become an IAS officer but I still believe that a person of moral fiber if given sufficient power can lighten up the lives of many. There will obviously be cynics who would advise you to join an NGO instead (as if the society has outsourced all the do-good responsibilities to the NGOs and the policymakers, facilitators and implementors have no role to play in adding value to the society). But what do these cynics know about people who actually want to help people and who derive immense satisfaction from impacting the lives of others in a positive way. Armstrong Pame (http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/cyber-savvy-resourceful-ias-officer-lays-a-real-road-to-peoples-hearts/article4628843.ece) is one among such civil servants who have justified their profession. There will obviously be people who will misunderstand and/or doubt your motivations because they are governed by their own narrow mindsets which make them believe that altruism is just a bookish term which they read in their primary school moral science textbooks. These people will always be doubtful of sincere motives because they themselves never harbored any. My sincere suggestion is that you simply ignore such people and do what you actually believe in. Do check this question to know about few great civil servants.

My simple six points to your question First of all its about the power which the constitution gave to an IAS officer. Second you can change the life of millions of people, can see real happiness in their eyes, can make a real life time changes in the people Third there will be a lot of people under your command. You can exhibit your authority to make the things done Fourth - Your willingness to fight against the social evil like poverty, corruption, unemployment, gender inequality. You will be the commander with a lot of dedicated soldiers to fight against these "You can see the change what you want to see in the society with your abilities" Fifth - You will be a king/queen crowned with beacon to administer a district or department Sixth - You can be role a model for the next generation. Every adult may dream to become an IAS officer like you

IAS is not about any individual nor it's a game for power-hungry people; it's only about serving people. It takes 5-10 years(at least) to understand constitutional setup for a new IAS entrant; require rigorous training's under various subordinates within Govt. structure; needs to be fit enough to work in unfavorable conditions. After then one got prepared to manage functionality of a department but even then you are not left alone; a long hierarchy of IAS/State level officers will be in-place. A lot of younger gen wants to be an IAS because of the fame(honeypot) it brings with and that's natural too but one needs to be mentally tough because there are higher chances that you will be posted in far-flung ares(North-east, J&K, Naxalite regions); metropolitan are grabbed by senior one's already. Lots & Lots of candidates selected by UPSC left the job(you can put an RTI if you don't believe) after few years when they can't found the job charming anymore; but they took away the benefits which are life-long. I personally know two IAS officers who went for higher studies in UK(over state expenditure) and never came back again. So if you really want to serve countrymen then you have to be calm and smart enough to be fit-in among various cultural differences exist within the mainland; required knowledge will come to you as the time goes. Best of Luck for you exams!!

My Dear Child,We understand your concern , UPSC is not meant for selection you solely on basis of dogs(hahaha). IAS officer is head of District under him/her there are so many departments which works along with officer and staff. IAS officer is meant to improve lifes of poorer and adminstrating the rural/urban areas.Yes after becoming IAS you can save anyone life from people to animals in situations like disasters/calamity along with muncipalites/panchyats.

Why do I want to become an IAS officer? I would definitely be lying if i say that I dreamt of being an IAS since childhood and nothing would be far from the truth if I would say that I want to become an IAS, only to serve the people of my country. 1). A challenge: The reality is that after being in a routine and mundane job for almost 3 years I felt like a machine, designed to do a repetitive task day in and day out. I wanted to do something good and challenging for myself and in the process give something back to this world too, by helping those who are less fortunate than me. Now, one can always say that if you wanted to do good for the society then you could have joined an NGO. My counter to that would be if I only wanted to serve others I could have joined an NGO & I have no qualms in admitting that I am not that selfless. On the challenging front, I would say that I have been an average student all my life so preparing for this exam after leaving my job is itself a challenge to begin with and acing this challenge would be a personal victory for me. 2). Perks of being an IAS: I was attracted by the power, position, respect and authority that comes with the tag of IAS. 3). Empathy: I have always felt that the top officers of administration lack this quality and I have ample reserves of this magnanimous human quality. I believe if I become an IAS I would be able to bridge this critical missing link between the public and the government administration. I do not know that I will clear this exam or not but I will die trying for it.

As far as the condition of the women and the poor is concerned, an IAS officer can do a lot about it. However, when it comes to dogs, the animal welfare societies like PETA are already doing a lot and IAS officers may provide them help if they need it. But an IAS has numerous other responsibilities which come before animal rights. He might be too busy to dedicate time to animal welfare. So, if you are that serious about dogs, better option would be to join a NGO dealing with animal welfare. You will be able to dedicate more time to them.

It is truly said that god helps those who help http://themselves.In my opinion even animal do not require our help as they have immense amount of sensitivity toward any change. I can tell you do not help any needy one let them find their own way, by doing this it will give them confidences to resist, ability to rise again and again but still you want to help them do not waste your time in dreaming about becoming IAS .You can start from today onward more precisely from now on .just do it

I want to be an IAS officer because I want to climb up the social ladder and make my father a proud man. I have a opted for this career because it is very challenging right from the preparation till the end of the career. One sees a lot of things that system has and is not seen by the general pubic. I have seen that the current education system in the country is facing a lot of problems. Students in Government run schools have a lot of potential which is being wasted as it is not being tamed with adequate training and lack of infrastructure to support it. I want to work in the education field improve the system with innovative ideas and sincere efforts. Of course everyone has personal agendas when comes to choosing a career. I too have them but the country and the service towards it takes the first position.
