'99 minivan-intermittient front wiper

QUESTION: When switched on in any setting my front wipers will come on when they feel like it. Main fuse is good, swapped in known good motor and switch assembly. Swapped relays under the hood with known good, I was reading another post you had about "a fuse-like device directly under the multi-wire plugs" refering to #7. If I am looking at the correct devices they are thin yellow unit looking kind of like thermo fuses or something. Mine are not numbered, and they don't come out easy so I don't want to just start pulling so which might be #7. Voltages to the relays are good when running and can hear the on relay kick in when the motor kicks on but not with the switch, voltages seem ok on the switch also. I'm wondering about the BCM but EVERYTHING else on the vehicle is working fine. ANSWER: Hi Stan, If the motor and switch and relays are known good, then either fuse 19 in the power box under the hood is intermittent (so verify it shows 12v on both sides when you have requested wipers) of the positive temp coefficient device is intermittent (so verify similarly, it is in the 7th position counting from the left in the box under the dash where there should be such deivices in position 1,3,7,8,9) and do this when you have asked for the wipers to operate on low or high. If the fuse and the ptc seem solid then the wire that carries the variable voltages from the switch to the bcm (dark greem/yellow at pin 6 of the switch to pin 7 of the #2 plug of the pcm), or the red/violet wire to the ground the actuation coil of the "on" relay (from pin 73 of the #1 plug of the pcm to the outside pin of the wiper 'on' relay socket) is intermittent, or the bcm itself is not responding properly to the voltage that comes from the various positions of the wiper switch. The PTC may be finicky and 'opening' when it is conducting current in the proper range (less than 9 amps). Please 'rate' my answer (see below). Thanks. Roland ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: For future info the PTCs are soldered into the main fuse board and the only way to really check them out is to remove the fuse panel, Not to difficult, but a mess of wiring to keep track of, then remove the BCM and open the back of the panel. From there...Do you have information of the part as the dealer does not show this as being separately available.

Answer:
Hi Stan, The manual doesn't give information about replacing the PTC's. My inclination would be to verify that there is 12V present on both ends when you have requested the wiper function. If it is there on both ends then the device is not causing the non-operation at that moment in time. If 12v is only present on one end then it is 'open' and that would explain non-operation of the wipers at that moment. I find it strange that the PTC's aren't available, though maybe they are considered indestructible. I would believe a 15 amp fuse would stand-in if you need it and can't get a replacement. I can xerox copy the circuit and postal mail it to you so that you can check out the various points to understand exaxtly why you aren't getting the normal function. Send me a follow-up where you list a postal mailing address. And if you would consider a rate/nominate response that would be most appreciated. Roland
