What kind of industry is google in?

Can Google be taken over by the government?

  • We saw this scenario play out in the finance industry where "systematically important" companies were bailed out by the gov't. The way I see it, Google is one of the most systematically important companies out there. Assuming this, what would happen if Google were to be taken over by the gov't and how would that scenario come come to fruition? What kind of implications will this have across the world?

I'd argue that when the banks were bailed out by the government the banks had taken over the government by using public funds to bail them out, not the other way around. And yes, of course Google could take over a part of our government. It happens all the time, is what lobbyists are for, and is very common.

That is extremely unlikely It seems that most people here are leaning towards yes, but i find it outlandishly unlikely that it could happen for a number of reasons. 1. The banks got bailed out because of the credit crisis. In rough terms they lend a lot of money to people who could not pay the loans. Because banks also lend each other money they were in danger of taking the whole system down which would stop society in its tracks. If everyone stopped using Google tomorrow there would be other (obviously slightly worse search engines) to take its place. 2. Google is basically comprised of software and human intellectual capital. It is easy to move and can technically run from any set of data centers in any country, which means that if Google somehow got into trouble in the US nothing would stop running. 3. Since were talking bailout here were imagining Google running out of money. Even if Google's ad revenue suddenly saw a steep drop off it would still be possible to scale the company back. Additionally there are other good revenue sources that are growing well so it is just very hard to imagine Google suddenly running out of money. Comparing to banks, Google doesn't lend money out to a lot of people who might suddenly default on their loans. This is not official Google answers just 3 points of logic as to why Google is much too different to banks to ever realistically get in a situation where a bailout is needed. A lot of smart investor types seem to trust the company as evidenced by the rising stock prices.

And the answer is yes.. undoubtedly google is the biggest company or the technological giant of the world.. Now have you ever given it a thought so as to how the information is being is transmitted over the internet . or how facebook or google recommends the pages or websites to you. or why gmail wants to confirm your phone number every time you log in . and the answer is the way you surf the internet from your home or from your office. Over the years google has gathered so much information from the people around the world that it is nearly impossible for google to shut itself down. the government won't allow it to do that. because it is a leading source of information for the government . so instead of shutting down google the government will happily take it over..
