Chinese currency symbol

QUESTION: I had my PC reformatted. I had2003 installed previously and always had access to the Chinese Yuan symbol as a cell currency format. After my PC was re-done,2003 (11.5612.5606) was installed. Now cells that had been formatted with the Yuan are no longer showing it. Instead, they look like this ¥-2,000. It does not show up as a currency format. How can I get this back? ANSWER: Joe, Excuse my ignorance, but I have no Idea what the Chinese Currency Symbol for the Yuan (Renminbi) is supposed to look like. I did do some googling and came up with some different answers. When I select a cell and format it as currency, then if I select the currency symbol dropdown, under format=> Cell=>Number Tab, select currency, for the Chinese (PRC) it shows the symbol you are showing. If I pick that then my cell looks like ¥-2,000 as you show and that produced by currency formatting. (emphasis added) If you go way down in the currency symbol selection dropdown in the formatting dialog list you can use the CNY as the currency symbol. then your number would appear as -CNY 2,000 or (CNY 2,000) (Your choice - this may be affected by your regional settings in the control panel as well) The CNY appears to be the ISO 4217 symbol If I haven't answered the question, perhaps you could contact me directly with the specifics and we can get it ironed out ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: I hadn't been able to figure this out until in Outlook, I selected an old email I sent to China and I got a message saying that I needed the Chinese Language Pack installed. I clicked installed, inserted my XP disk, and now the symbols appear in spreadsheets that previously had them. They appear as a custom format, but do not appear in the format drop down list, which they used to. So, my problem is mostly solved. I thought you'd like an update. Using the CNY format is very cumbersome and busy looking, so I didn't like that option.

Answer:
Joe, Yes. Thank you for the update. I know your regional settings can affect some of the currency formatting options such as negative sign/parentheses and black/red choices. But I wouldn't think it would affect which currency symbols are available. It is good that you are back working. I will keep an eye out on anything I can find on this issue and let you know.
