Where can I find historic stock data?

Where can one find a free data set with historical daily stock prices for the past 10-20 years?

  • It should include major stocks on NYSE and NASDAQ, providing daily open and close prices for each stock. The larger the set (in terms of stocks included), the better.

http://finance.yahoo.com/ provides historical stock price for majority of stocks on NYSE and NASDAQ. You can also use their APIs to directly import data. https://code.google.com/p/yahoo-finance-managed/wiki/csvHistQuotesDownload provides details on how you can use the api to download the data.

Both yahoo finance and google has stock data that can be downloaded in text format. The data they have, however, do not include stocks that are delisted. If you use Excel, there is a yahoo user group called xltraders. They actually have members created tools to grab data from these sources into Excel. Go check that out. There used to be a few projects going on offering free daily and intraday data but obviously they run out of funding and no one trying their hands on this lately.

So far I was able to find this source: http://www.eoddata.com It's kinda close to what I'm looking for, but the data set only ranges from Aug 2009 to Aug 2010. Any better sources?
