Where can I find a search log of an "internal site search" to analyze?
-
After reading the book http://rosenfeldmedia.com/books/search-analytics/ it would be awesome to have a big search log of an internal site search to try out the things learned in the book. We are doing an UX Book Club (http://www.meetup.com/ux-book-club-switzerland/events/145904072/) about this book, so it would be great if everyone in the group could use a search log to analyze it. Already found a log sample here: http://rosenfeldmedia.com/blogs/search-analytics/log-sample-google-appliance/. But it's only 9 search queries, which does not give a lot of opportunity for analyzing...

Answer:
asking of a search provider to open is logs is like asking Facebook for access to its full data-graph ;). It is a (generally) very well protected asset both because of privacy concerns but also because of the value/information/intel/machine-learning/... one can gain from those logs. The latest attempt to "open-search-log" of any significant scale only last a few days: http://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/09/19/what-are-readers-looking-for-wikipedia-search-data-now-available/ You might get lucky and find that file somewhere on the web (I did not). Another approach is to leverage google itself to search for common patterns in filetypes of interest. By fiddling around you might be able to pull out files like: - http://www.hgs-gh.com/logs/ - http://www.absoluteradio.co.uk/search.log

I was successful by asking people I know from universities. I asked mainly universities that have a course in human-computer interaction. Their advantages when giving us their log: 1. They get publicity in the UX community (potential students) 2. They get a free analysis of their search log I also hoped that universities are open to help book clubs because both of them exist to increase the knowledge of people, but I don't know how much this played a role in the end.

SearchBlox provides the query logs for viewing. After you install it, you can find it under the /searchblox/logs folder https://searchblox.tenderapp.com/kb/general/what-types-of-logs-are-available-within-searchblox

Coincidentally, the author of that book works a few desks away from me. Check http://sematext.com/search-analytics/ - I think that's what you're after.

Why not setup a website yourself, and begin tracking the search results - thereby you can get your own statistics you can work with. You can read more about setting up tracking for your internal search in Google Analytics here: https://www.cludo.com/en/blog/track-zero-search-results-in-google-analytics/ At http://www.cludo.com/enwe also provides statistics, but it might be overkill to purchase our product just to do some small testing.
