What is the google checkout?

What's the difference between Google Wallet and Google Checkout?

  • Answer:

Now, as says, nothing but branding. However, originally, they were distinct: Checkout was a product that provided all the functionality for a chekout process in online shopping (hence the name). The retailer could build their site, collect items in a virtual shopping basket, and then pass this basket as input to Checkout, which would take the user through the rest of the process: selecting the delivery address and payment method, completing the purchase, transferring the money, and then placing the order with the retailers' fulfilment system. Checkout was the user interface, as well as the repository for user addresses and payment mechanisms, and the backend integration and risk checking systems. Wallet was a product that enabled users to use their mobile phone to pay at physical retail stores using the NFC-based contactless payment system. It also included the ability for a user to store credit card information, though the mechanism was distinct (Checkout stored it on a server and never transmitted it to the retailer, while Wallet stored it on the phone itself, and transmitted it to the card payment terminal, just like a normal contactless credit card). Risk checking was done by the merchant's standard card processing company - the transaction was just like a normal credit card transaction. In summary, the differences were online vs offline, web (and mobile web/app) vs mobile physical device, and the risk systems. However, there were many areas of overlap, not least in customer messaging. As Android grew, it became confusing to have Checkout as the payment mechanism for the Play Store, while Wallet was the payment mechanism for purchasing items in physical retailers. Over time, much of the functionality and branding were merged, and now, Wallet is Google's payment product, covering both online and offline.
