What is interesting about a Federal Reserve Bank?

What benefits are there to being or using a member bank of the Federal Reserve as contrasted with a commercial bank that is not a member?

  • Only about 38% of commercial banks are members of the Federal Reserve[1]. I am wondering both what benefits member banks receive that non-member banks do not as well as how this should factor into a consumer's decision of where to bank. 1: http://www.federalreserveeducation.org/about-the-fed/structure-and-functions/

  • Answer:

There aren't very many benefits of being a Federal Reserve member bank which may explain why there are so many banks that aren't Fed members.  All nationally chartered banks are by definition Federal Reserve members and national banks are subject to federal law rather than state law, which makes things a lot easier if you happen to be a large bank that does business in many states. For consumer banking, it doesn't matter.  As long as it is FDIC insured, it's not going to matter to you.

The federal reserve is subject to federal oversight.  The others are not and may not be held accountable.
