Gray lines on video playback?

When we record the computer screen (or any other screen for that mater) with a video recorder, why is that we get arbitrary lines in the playback? (we can see such lines even while playback)

  • Answer:

What you are seeing are http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moir%C3%A9_patterns   Computer screens and the camera CCD chip are both patterns of dots and lines and the two patterns can interact to give the fringes you see. Sometimes if the laptop screen and camera are perfectly vertical and just the right distance apart you can make the effect go a\way. As others have said Moire fringes are just one of the problems you face when trying to photograph a computer screen or TV.

It's an interference pattern, the screen has evenly spaced pixels as does the camera.  However the lens and distance for a variable ratio between the two.  So if the leftmost pixels on the screen and camera line up, the next two are going to be a fraction of a pixel askew, and the next two twice as much, up until a few more pixels along, the center of the camera pixel is looking at in between two screen pixels, so it looks a bit darker.    You can minimize this by moving in or out until the lines get wider and wider, eventually you can find a spot where the lines get wider than the screen and that looks just fine.
