Low resolution on my computer/tv screen?

Oculus Rift (product): Can a low resolution V.R screen damage your eyes?

  • The screen resolution in the oculus Rift is extremely low.  640px  this is so bad it creates a "screen door" effect when you view the LCD screen.  Can being only an inch or two from the actual screen for prolonged periods of time staring at such poor resolution damage your eye-sight ?

  • Answer:

The 640px resolution is for each individual screen/eye of the developer's version and Oculus VR plans to increase this resolution for the consumer version which has yet to be released. I know this doesn't answer the question, but I'd also assume, like you seem to, that a finer resolution would reduce eye strain.

Afraid I can't recall the source, but a game journalist spent prolonged periods in the Rift and developed what he called "grid vision". He'd still see grids when he closed his eyes or blinked for a few minutes?/hours? (can't recall) after getting out of the simulation. I don't think there are currently any published academic papers on the subject of long-term VR use. It just hasn't been an issue so far. Expect that to change quickly once the consumer versions hit the market next year. You might have to wait for a year or two after that to get a definitive answer.
