Sebring power window only goes down
-
QUESTION: I have an 02 Sebring sedan 4dr which the passenger window will go down but not up (all other windows work). I read your diagnosis about this to another person and understand it is the relay. Where is this relay located? I looked inside the passenger door and cannot find it. Is it in the drivers door? Thank You ANSWER: Hi Craig, I looked at the wiring diagrams and do not see a power window relay in the circuit, only a curcuit breaker which it that opened would shut down all the windows. It appears to me that the problem could be in either the master switch (specifically the passenger subswitch) or in the passenger door's window switch proper. Basically, when both of those switches are in neutral they actually have two individual contacts that have to be closed for the window to subsequently go up or down when one of those poles is moved to the active position (the other pole hase to be in good contact. There is a way to test each of the switches with an ohmmeter to figure out which switch is causing the problem. But I suspect it would be solved if you bought a spray can of electronic contact cleaner with a straw applicator. Then remove each of the switches and use the straw applicator to spray inside the switch body through a hole or crack while you position the switch lever in both the up and in the down positions (which would bare the neutral contact surfaces for cleaning. Then see if that solves the problem. If not I will tell you how to test the switches to figure out which one isn't working. Please 'rate' my answer (see below). Thanks, Roland ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: OK no relay. So far I have replaced the drivers side master control and the passenger side window motor and still have the same problem. I took one of the rear door switches and tried it on the passenger side front door, same problem. Any ideas? Thanks ANSWER: Hi Craig, Having replaced the master switch and substituted a good local switch and it still won't work suggests to me that the motor itself is only willing to go down but not up. You could test that theory by jumping a positive and a ground wire from the battery to the passenger motor plug and try the two polarity choices at the motor proper. The circuit diagram shows there to be a 'positive temperature coefficient device inside the motor (which is a self-resetting circuit breaker) and it may be the case that the friction involved in raising the window is quite different then lowering the window such that the device 'opens' when it is asked to raise the window. Try helping the motor by mechanically lifting the window mechanism while you also try the switch as a test of that theory. If corect then you would want to try to reduce the friction in the upward motion. I can't explain how it could mis-behave otherwise given it doesn't work even with two 'good' switches. I can copy the circuit diagram from an '04 manual that I have on a CD and attach that to an email I would send to you directly. But to do that I need to have you email address which I am not shown by Allexperts. You would need to tell me that address in a PRIVATE followup message where you would tell me it in the test section of the question. If you don't make it private the address will be erased and I won't see it. Please 'rate' my answer. Thanks, Roland ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: I have tried manually helping the window up and when I removed and replaced the motor there was little friction to lift the window. I'll play with the motor I took out which only went down 9same as the old one) and see if I can get it to go the other direction with battery power. I don't think two different motors would have the thermal problem. Couldn't figure out how to do a private message.

Answer:
Hi Craig. I agree, and so I would also check to see if the circuit is delivering 12v to the motor in both polarities when you try the up/down motion. If not, then the issue is somewhere in the circuit (and presumably not the switches). Try a new question, and you should notice that there is a box to click which makes it private. Then tell me your email address and I will send the circuit to you attached to an email. Thanks for the rating and nomination. Roland
