Filter particular month's data from date column in

QUESTION: Hare Krishna Jan, This is Srivasa. We useto maintain our temple members database. Each member has their Birthday/Marriage Annv../Child's Birthday as special day. On this special day we invite them to temple and do special prayers and special dinner prasadam (Lords mercy in form of dinner) is given. There are dates of all ranges, i.e. very old dates 50 years to the recent dates. Our concern is we need to filter the data only by month. We need to get all special dates in the month of "January". Our date in the data base is in the following format: 10/01/2010 (Month/Day/Year). Kindly suggest. Srivasa (Temple Monk) ANSWER: I expect the easiest way depends on your version of Excel. in Excel 2003 and older, I would suggest to add an extra column which shows just the month: =Month(A1) Then you can use Data, Filter, Autofilter and filter on the new month column. Exceland 2010 have special date filters in the autofilter dropdwon, one of them should be by month. ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: Hare Krishna Jan, Thanks for the solution. Actually I was literally typing the same thing in a new column. But your solution of using MONTH formula helped to make things ease. 1. Some of the fields have blanks, in those places its reflection answer as 1. (any suggestion) to get rid of these. Else they are getting mixed with January. 2. The result is showing in number format. Could that be changed to text format of the month. eg 2 as FEBRUARY. Wish these will be at your finger tips. Please suggest. Srivasa

Answer:
AFter rethinking this a bit: - Instead of the MONTH function, just use a direct reference to the cell with the date: =A1 - Format that column with a custom number format of mmmm Now you can filter months too. The only drawback I see is that in the filter dropdown, the months are in alphabetical order.
