How to install basement fire blocking?

Gas h2o htr install

  • QUESTION: 1. I have a gas (LP) tankless water heater to install. I have no problem with the install itself but I am unsure as to the exhaust system design. Upon egress from the house, how far up must the chimney vertically proceed? Can I merely terminate it with a through-the-wall horizontal cap or must it really extend vertically. I have checked the intake/replacement air use requirement using the 50 ft3 per 1000 btu formula and easily meet that spec. 2. If I must install a vertical chimney, I have in hand 30+ feet of double walled chimney which was used for a wood burning stove from my basement. I beleive it has ceramic between the inner and outer walls. The tankless water heater has a 4" diameter exhaust and the chimney is 6" on the inner wall (connection point). Would this be too much volume, and prevent adequate exhaust flow? ANSWER: Don: I must advise against DIY gas water heater installation; too much can go wrong, and the risks are huge (Fire and carbon monoxide poisoning, to name two). Hire a licensed pro, and insist on a permit and inspection. If you are a licensed pro, let me know and I'll be happy to help. Fred ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: I am a pro I just need help in applying the NFPA codes. I inspect systems in nursing and resident care homes and well as a loss prevention inspector for the insurance industry. I am well aware of the fire risks and the CO concerns. I was hoping you could assist me in determining the application and codes needed here you bacground indicated you were well versed in the codes. But really, anyone can sit behind acomputer and say call someone, hire someone, make sure they have a permit. But still, thank you so much for going out of your way to assit me. I am sure it is something I will never forget!

  • Answer:

Don: I respect your expertise, but this is specialized: Are you equipped to measure manifold pressure, pressure test the gas lines, and are you licensed and insured to do so? I'm only thinking about the people who live in the home with you, and those who may buy the home when/if you sell it; that's what I'm sworn to do. I hope you understand. ;<( Fred
