Water heater drip pan?

Code question about gas water heater

  • Is there any code that states that a plastic drip pan can't be placed under a gas water heater that is located on the second floor? I live in IL. Checked the Internet and can't find the answer. If you can help, let me know. Thank you

  • Answer:

This somewhat depends on local code enforcement, they take precedence. Per the UPC (uniform plumbing code) and the IRC (international residential code) W/H in attics or other spaces where damage would occur if they leaked - pans are required. Pans shall be galvanized steel (24 gauge) or OTHER APPROVED pans. Plastic is allowed if approved and marked as such. Min 1-1/2" depth. Pans must have a min. 3/4" (UPC) or 1" (IRC) drain. Drain must run to an "approved location" (indirect wast or to the exterior) The "code enforcement" is somewhat fuzzy. Different codes are used in different places, different year of code, local "amendments", and manufacturer's recommendations all have an effect. Usually the Local Code Enforcement/Building Department or AHJ (authority having jurisdiction)wins out.
