Is it worth it to keep my grandfathered AT&T unlimited data plan for use with the iPhone 5?
-
Basically, I'm looking for a cost-benefit analysis. Here's what I'm thinking so far: I don't use much more than 5GB per month right now across all of my devices, so the unlimited plan sort of seems unnecessary. Especially when you consider that, until I get rid of unlimited, I can't activate mobile hotspot or tethering, which really stinks. Then again, the usefulness of either of those is diminished once I get rid of unlimited, which is kind of lame. Still, I would almost be willing to get rid of my unlimited plan if only for the convenience of being able to tether my phone to my computer, say in emergencies where I really need to get my Macbook Pro on the web but can't find Wi-Fi. The only thing that makes me wary about getting rid of the unlimited plan is that, with the introduction of LTE into the iPhone 5, there's a good chance I'll be doing more data-intensive stuff on my phone, e.g. frequent FaceTime calls. So, the question: is using the unlimited plan to take advantage of an iPhone 5 more valuable than being able to use mobile hotspot/tethering?

Answer:
This is rather subjective and at best I can opine on your situation based on the information you provide. The answer to "What is your aggregate mobile use & cost of data across all your devices?" is the determining factor. You will use more data on your LTE device. Assuming you continue to use just about 5Gb, and not more, a 4Gb tethering plan will cost you $45/mo an an additional $10 for the extra gigabyte or part thereof = $55. If you have the answer to the question above, your decision should be binary.

I am facing a similar dilemma. One of the factors that concerns me is what does the future look like? With the rapid advances in various technologies, what will data usage needs be? And for that matter, what will the companies do once they get everyone off their unlimited plans? Will they still be relatively cheaper? Those things are probably nothing to worry about and may not amount to a rational reason to continue wasting a lot of money, which is what I'm doing now because I don't use much data on my phone. Like you, that would change if I were able to tether. In any case, it's hard to imagine a scenario where I would lose money by switch off the unlimited, but I have a hard time letting things go that I can never get back.
