QUESTION: "Without warning all instruments no longer work. Including Gas, Temperature, Speedomenter, odomenter, Tach, Cruise Control air conditioner and heater. Car runs fine but nothing worke but the engine and lights including turning indicator. I have checked all fuses and have a factory Service manual 1993 version for the intrepid I sold 2 years ago both were great cars never a problem with either all engine components were the same. The factory manual electrical is the worst one I have ever used instead of a ladder wiring diagram they have pages that are difficult to follow as you have to continually flip from one page to another. I believe that it may be the body computer, they reference it but do not tell exactly what it purpose is or what it controls . I am a do it yourself guy and my cars have not been in the shop for anything as I usually can fix anything that comes up but I am at witts end. The self diagonostics for the ATC does not work either. Any help or references you might have would be much appreciated" I received an email from kevin that it was out of hid expertise Hopefully you can help me as I am not a parts changer I try to troubleshoot and replace the bad part. I have electrical experience so I understand most circuits but when they show wires going into a computer there is no way of checking continuity etc. Your help would be appreciated. Thanks and was asked on 01/05/2012 ANSWER: Hi Morris, The main power for operating the instrument cluster is fuse #17 behind the end cap of the dash. So check that one to see if it might have a subtle crack in the wire. if it shows voltage then you might want to check for voltage at pin 6, red/white wire, at the black plug on the back of the cluster with the ignition "on". On the A.C. and cruise control do you mean that those don't work, or that the illumination lights that tell you when they are in use don't work? On the heat/ac control, is that a conventional or an automatic temp control type? The fuse for the speed control is powered by fuse #14. Roland ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: I will check the fuses but as I stated the air conditioning does not work including the blower and the compressor clutch, it is a Auto temp control which is the only A/C they offered on the LHS the lights go on illumination the panel on the A/C but none of the buttons work the temp can be adjusted {number only ) but the fan speed doesnt do anything as the fan does not work. The cruise control does not function at all. before last week everything worked fine. I checked both fuses the one for the inst power was good#17 but the one for the cruise control was blown #14 both are 5Amp I changed #14 turned the key on the dash lights came on momentarily but it immediately blew so I am going to see exactly how the load side of the fuse is connected and try and follow it thru the wiring diagrams in the book, Any other suggestions ANSWER: Hi Morris, Perhaps you changed out fuse 17 and it blew again? because that is the one for the cluster function. The 14 is the cruise control. Those fuses are operated by different sections of the ignition switch so I don't see common mode failure issue. On the A.C unit, the ATC is powered directly from the battery on a fusible link that is brown is color and attaches to the battery on a separate "eyelet" at the clamp on the + post. It goes to a 4-wire disconnect nearby. Fuse 14 only operates the cruise and it provides power to the cruise control relay's actuation coil and to the system as whole thru the relay when it is closed. I don't see it being related to the dash lights as such. Roland ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: Fuse #14 is the one that blewit has (cruise mess ctr) on it according to the wiring diagram it brings pwr to the vehicle speed control relay coil pin#1& & Pin #18 on the relay. It also brings power to the pwr mirror switch pin #5 and to power door lock system. Believe these are LED lights. It also supplies power to cavity C1 which brings power to pin #13 ( Marked ignition) on the body computer connector which on the computer is marked ignition Start/ run feed. whowever the engineer was that put the wiring diagram together obviously never troubleshooted anything in his life as there are no electrical potentials on any of the diagrams so that they can be checked to ground for voltage or a short. Thanks for your help but it would be helpfull if there is a ladder wiring diagram that would allow me tro go to ond page instaad of 25 to attempt to troubleshoot the system

Answer:
I would believe you could read the resistance to ground shown on cavities H7 (front of junction block and C1 (rear of junction block) to see which one is low enough to blow the fuse, and of course pull the speed control relay when making those measurement. One of those circuits then can be troubleshot. If you want to check potentials then these would all by 12v with the igntion in the run position. Sorry, I got focused on the speed circuit and overlooked the other circuits on that fuse. There are lots of possible causes for a short among those circuits, but start by finding which of the main three is causing it. So your cluster is still 'out' entirely? That could be due to #14 or 17 since it does power the body computer which puts out a decode high and decode low wire to the cluster. Fuses 14 and 17 are the supply sources for the body computer so either of those blowing will certainly take out lots of functions. Roland
