How can I share and collaborate on files without allowing the recipient to copy, move or have any record of the file on their computer?

Hi there, I work with volunteers who are located abroad. So far we've been using email and cloud synching software such as dropbox to collaborate on files and share them. However, I need a way that will be much more secure for some more confidential files. Specifically, I need to: Share files in a way that they will not actually cross over to the recipient's computer. They should not be able to be copied or moved to their computer from mine or from the cloud. This means that they can work on the file that is physically located on my computer or the cloud, but they cannot move it or copy it, and their computer keeps no records or other data snippets of it. This is important; I need that when the person ends their volunteering period, they will not have possession of the files or records of them; meaning, they were not able to obtain copies, and when they are done their work with me, they are expelled from the shared folder or group and I keep all files. Therefore, I don't need to contact them and ask them to destroy the files and records on their computer or email inbox (which I have no way of ensuring they will actually do). I hope this description made sense. I need the files to have client-side encryption as well (I have begun using Wuala for this). Is there any system that offers features or interfaces like this? I don't have enough experience with this yet to even know the terms to search for. I read about Windows Rights Management Services but I am not sure if that will be the right solution. If anyone could give me some information or point me in the right direction, that would be great. Thanks!

Check out Virtual Data Room providers if you want to use Digital Right Management on your documents shared with other people. We do this every day for folks all over the world.

Generally, if you are giving somebody 'view-only access' (i.e. they can't download them, save them on their computer, or print), they will not be able to edit them. However, you are right in that you need a more secure solution than Dropbox to share sensitive documents. Check out virtual data rooms- they're made for sharing/storing confidential documents. We can give you a free trial at SecureDocs- http://www.securedocs.com

You could try http://Scribd.com. Files you share are in a flash format, which is not easy to copy. If you want to "collaborate" with others, youll need to allow edit access, with which people can simply copy the contents of the document.

If there is a strong demand, we could configure documents on http://edocr.com to meet your requirements. It would be a matter of disabling print and download But we do not offer document editing facilities. Comments have to be collected and then edited offline and republished for next set of comments

There are many different cloud-based options for content collaboration and online sharing...but if you want to prevent readers from copying or moving your content out of the collaboration tool, you will need to consider some DRM. Protectedpdf is a plug-in free option - it will allow you to control access to your content and revoke access if misuse is suspected but it will not allow you to have any controls over the end users desktop, which would be required if you want to be sure any and all records on their computers are erased.
