2001 chrysler 300 no temperature control - diag error 23

  • QUESTION: Hi Ron, I read a previous answer of yours where you seem to have knowledge on this issue. I just purchased a used Chrysler 300m 2001 3.5l v6 but the temp control is not working. The seller wasn't specific but said he wasn't able to get heat before so he wired up a switch in the blower control module to just have it turn on high and blow hot air. I don't think this switch would affect the temp control but I imagine that's why he wired it up in the first place. So the auto and manual temp controls do nothing, it always blows hot air, and of course because of the switch the fan speed control doesn't work either. I'm not worried about the fan speed but I really need the AC to work ASAP. So far I've discovered that this error 23 has something to do with the blend control actuator, which I assume controls the temperature, but I'm not sure where it is located or where to go from here. All I really need is the ability to turn on and off my AC, temp control beyond that doesn't matter to me, even if I can manually set it to cold and leave it there... for the summer road trip anyway. Ultimately it would be nice to fully resolve this, but I'm not super mechanically inclined, though I'm totally willing to spend a few hours figuring it out. PLEASE give me some hints! Attached is an image of the fan control he wired the switch to. I don't think this has relevance to the temperature control. ANSWER: Hi Ren, First off I would remove the wiring that was added and notice any wiring connections that were modified apparently and tell me what look disturbed. I can't ID what is going on there because I don't have a vehicle like that to compare with you are showing me in the photo. If the blower didn't blow and that was the 'fix' then I would suspect the ATC blower power module went bad but if he got the power for the fan from another 12v source then also verify that fuse #23 in the box behind the left end cap of the dash (30 amp) is functional and not showing either a frank blowout or a crack in its internal wire. The power module is the device into which the fan plugs, has 2 plugs, and is held in place by a couple of screws. You can probably get one at wrecking yard at a low cost. I assume that the rest of control panel works because you got the 23 fault code. I would do the code readout again, but after you see the 23 appears press the button that show the air distribution mode to be 'panel' (upper push of the 4th button) as that will bring up, one at a time, additional codes if present. If you only have the 23 code then that indeed suggests the blend air door actuator is not working. The door is located on the underside of the unit, close to the firewall on the left hand side of the unit There is another actuator toward the rear of the vehicle of it (the mode of distribution actuator) so note that one and don't bother it, besides it may not be visible without removing some duct work. Remove both the left and right silencer ducts on the underside edge of the dash for access to the blend door actuator. It has 5 wires on its plug (dark blue/red, red/white, pink/dark blue, dark blue/gray, and brown white) for id purposes. The actuator has 3 screws that hold it in place: the two toward the right are accessible from the right side of the stack, the one on the left from the left side. Pull the actuator straight down and notice how the 'key' is positioned so that you can put another actuator back in with the key similarly positioned to match with the hidden blend door key socket. Then do a 'calibration' of the overall unit to get the actuators in the right position by doing another fault code readout procedure. Then see if you can control the blower and the excess heat situation. You may have to add refrigerant to the unit to get cold air. Plesas "rate" my answer (see below). Thanks, Roland ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: Thanks. From the modified wiring I don't see that he has touched the power at all, he has simply taken the ground wire for full speed and attached it to the switch, so I just have full speed and off for the blower, which is fine by me, for now. I am having trouble understanding where the actual blend actuator door is, you say it is on the underside of the unit but I'm not sure what unit that would be? What do I have to remove to get to it? Got any pictures or diagrams that might help? Thanks.

  • Answer:

The unit is question is the HVAC unit under the dash the underside of which is visible if you remove the ducts at the edge of the dash on both sides. It is a large box-like unit that extends outward on both sides from the midline of the body. The actuators are on the onderside surface of that box as I described their locations to be. I can send you a drawing as an attachment to an email. To do that you need to tell me your email address. And to do that you have to send me a NEW question, check the box to make it private, and then tell in in the text of your question what that email address is. You have to do those steps as described or I won't get that address. Roland PS As I am going out for a while I am not accepting new questions. But you can send me a followup non-private question to tell me you address, only don't include the "@" , instead just double space between your name and the email service that you use so in that way the allexpert site won't recognize that this is an email address and automatically sensor it. Or you can wait until I am available again so you can send me a private new question.
