Are high resolution screens easier on the eyes than laptop screens?

What are some good laptops on the market that use CCFL backlit screens?

  • I just found out that I am part of a small group of people whose eyes cannot handle LED screens (they strain significantly). Unfortunately, almost all new laptops being shipped have LED screens. I am currently looking to buy a high-speed gaming laptop for <$800 that comes with a non-LED backlit screen. Any recommendations would be truly lifesaving.

Im sorry to hear that, unfortunately the transition started in 2007 so you will be hard pressed to find a new laptop that does not have an LED screen, especially a gaming one, as LED is better. You are most likely going to have to find a used one online or in your newspaper classifieds. I researched and asked some online companies that upgrade CCFL screens to LED and they say it is impossible to downgrade a screen from LED as it can cause the whole computer to fail and in most cases because the CCFL bulb is bigger than an LED bulb it will not fit inside the screen. If you can do without a laptop and use a desktop, you can oftentimes find a non LED monitor much easier then a certain laptop screen and then buy a desktop pc to hook up to it. If you increase your budget you can get pretty much anything you could need performance wise or even custom build one

There are two kinds of white LEDs and maybe you're not so sensitive to one kind or the other?   One kind uses three LEDs that sort-of make an average of white, the other kind uses an ultraviolet LED that shines through a white phosphor.   If your eyes can't stand even a hint of UV then the 3-color LEDs might be better for you.  Or if your eyes can't easily average out the three color ones, maybe the phosphor LEDs would be good.    I doubt if many laptop manufacturers divulge what kind of LEDs they use, but it's worth looking around and see if there are some you like.  Just a wild guess, but perhaps laptops that advertise "better color balance", they *might* be using phosphors.

While the transition started in 2007, some manufacturers still used CCFL backlights well after that, particularly for computers at both edges of the market.  I am looking at used laptops on eBay.  Apparently many of the HP G60 computers used CCFL displays, and that line was sold up to 2013.  I simply google the entire model number plus the words "CCFL LED" to see which repair screens are sold for that particular model.  It's not foolproof, but does give me an idea which display backlight it probably uses.
