How do I research what I.T. field to get into?

What approach should be taken to get in contact with a person doing research in the same field as yours?

  • A notable person, like a professor in a reputable university or somewhere in Google Labs would be very likely to ignore a novice's mail. What would be the correct way to approach such a person in order to work with him or offer him help in his ongoing work?

  • Answer:

No, actually, emailing cold works quite well. I've cold-emailed several of my research mentors -- at Stanford, Fermilab, and Caltech, Berkeley, and similar research institutions.  I've gotten several paid internships that way.  Try it; the worst they can say is no.

Well, actually, no, I think the odds are pretty good that your mail to a professor well-known in their field would not be ignored if it was rational as well as relevant to their research interests.  There is a somewhat lower probability that you'd get through to someone famous in industry, because they are far more likely to have screeners who read all incoming mail first. Go ahead and try it!
