93 cadillac fleetwood starting problems

QUESTION: Hi i have been having problems with my 93 cadillac fleetwood 5.7 l.After i had my radiator replaced my car would crank but not start i then replaced my fuel imjectors spark plugs spark plug wires cap and rotor ingniton control module (inside the steering column)igniton coil fuel pump and fuel pump relay.The car will start now but i have to spray starting fluid and there is gas going to the injectors however now when i try to turn the car on it wont even crank the dash lights will come on ,i have to put the key in the on position then go under my hood spray some starting flud and connect a wire from the starter to battery and the car will start any idea what it could be ANSWER: Hello, First, you appear to be dealing with more than one problem. I do not know what ignition control module inside the steering column you are talking about because there is no such thing in the steering column of this vehicle. I need to know what you are referring to. I am not trying to argue with you, its just there is nothing inside this steering column that affects cranking other than the 2 thin anti theft VATS wires. It sounds like the fuel pump is not primed. Why did you replace the fuel pump? Did you turn the ignition on with no gas in the tank? That would burn it out instantly. I do not understand why the fuel pump was changed if you only replaced the radiator. See, the problem with trying to help you here is that you changed so much and I don't understand why. Is there more to the original problems besides just changing the radiator? Or were you just guessing at things that might need replaced. If you need starting fluid to get the engine started, I am leaning towards a fuel pump again. The reason is that once the key is on and there is gas in the tank, the fuel system has constant pressure. If you don't have pressure and the fuel pump is cavatating (sucking air) the starting fluid (which I don't want you using because it can literally blow a head of an engine). Starting fluid is very dangerous and when I was a kid going out on service calls with my dad to start cars in the winter, many times the customer used it! My dad got burned many times when the engine back fired or worse yet, we had engine fires because of this crap. Its meant for diesel engines! Very dangerous stuff and using it on an aluminum engine can destroy it. If you are doing this, put some gas in a spray bottle. Damn parts stores sell this stuff and have no clue as to the damage it can do and most people don't know it either. The first thing I need to know on the cranking matter is what did you change in the steering column and we will go from there. We will do one problem at a time and hopefully I can help you here. http://www.autotheftexpert.com ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: I belive what I changed was a multi function switch And the fuel pump was replaced because we had checked the pressure it was throwing out and it was reading 0 pounds of pressure ANSWER: Hello, The multi-function switch was probably not even defective because it controls the wipers and cruise and nothing to do with the running or starting of the engine. You have a fuel delivery problem and from your description whether you changed it or not, it sounds like the fuel pump has no prime and is sucking air when trying to start the engine. as I said, don't use starter fluid. It is the worst thing yo can possibly due to an aluminum engine. You can put a hole in a piston or worse and starting fluid should only be used for diesel engines. Use a spray bottle filled with gasoline if you going to continue these tests. You need a fuel pressure gauge connected after the vehicle has been sitting for a while to replicate your problem. When you go to start the engine or just have the key in the run position, chances are real good yo will see no pressure. If this is your situation, replace the pump again, make sure you have at least three gallons in the tank. Turn the key on again and unless you have some blockage before the injectors, you will find you have pressure and the engine will start and run. Hello, If you want even more problems, put a junk yard column with a different resistance value on your key. You have a 1 in 14 chance of getting the exact one. (A very common problem-very, very, very common)problem is that the two white very thin VATS wires breaks inside the insulation. You need to measure the key resistor with an ohm meter. Then call around to local alarm stores and see if they have an extra VATS bypass kit. It has all 14 resistors and you can pick the one you need. They pay nothing for this kit because it comes with every alarm with remote start. Or you can go to radio shack and get a resistor within 10% value. Remove the black plastic hush panel under the dash. Got to the junction box at the firewall near the kick panel. Yo will either see these 2 very thin white wires next to each other or an orange sheath over it. Cut these wires leading from the junction box with enough room to work. One leads up the column, the other returns. You are bypassing the column VATS wiring, so just cut, solder your resistor in and put shrink wrap on it. The engine will most likely crank for you and that big ugly thing on the key has no meaning anymore. http://www.autotheftexpert.com
