What would be a good name for a new search engine?

When thinking up a name for a new search engine how do you make the name so good so that people can say 'I'll just GOOGLE that'?

  • People don't really say I'll go and 'blekko that' or I'll go and 'bing that'. I know part of the reason Is because google is the most popular search engine but it also has a very good name because it's same is similar to 'goggle' which is an synonym for look and that's part of the reason why google's same is so good and can be used in this way. So how can I think up a name that has the good points of google's name but of course it has to be different.

  • Answer:

I think the premise of your question is flawed: People don't say "google that" over "bing that" because Google is a "better word." I wasn't likely to say "google that" because the world "google" sounds like "goggles". I say "google it" because google is the definitive search engine. Over time "To Google" has become a verb form of a Proprietary Eponym, like Kleenex, Q-tip and Band-Aid. Generally, if you were starting a company and wanted to become "verbed", I'd say pickĀ  a nonsense or rarely-used word that sounds like a verb.

At first I will have to disagree with you that Blekko is not a name as good as Google. Blekko it, Blekko that, Blekko the names on that list, I am Blekkoing. As you said, it is not just as popular as Google and maybe as relevant. However, You can piggyback on the popularity of the GOOGLE brand-name. Since you want it to be different, Definitely. It all boils down to what makes your search engine different. For example, if your search engine is dedicated to searching food recipes, then you can use FOOGLE if the strength of your search engine is in pictorial site, then you can use PIGLE or people then PEOGLE This will not only make it easy to remember, but likewise have an impression of affiliated to Google, the most popular search engine. In trends, the double "oo" has proved to go popular, such as: Google Yahoo Facebook But it is mere coincidence, which is a strategy under maybe. Upon which some sites have tried to imitate such as badoo, zoomr. It seems to have worked as Badoo tends to be more memorable than the older same company owned netlog. The most important thing is once a web project is useful, it defines a niche for itself.

I think you're 100% wrong about Google popularity being due to the name. In fact, being old, I can remember when they introduced it they were often mocked for it's general terribleness (and for not being able to spell googol - http://www.webcitation.org/68ubHzYs7 :-) If Duck Duck Go was as useful to as many people, folk would be going "Just duck it". Brands aren't built up on the name alone. They're built up on the promise of the customer experience that brand provides. When you're a startup you're usually in the process of discovering what that experience should be. Fixating and worrying about naming and identity too early is going to get you intro trouble.
