Adding additional electrical meter to new service
-
QUESTION: I have a state electrical license but no longer do electrical work for a living. I am wireing a new house for a friend. He has requested an additional meter be installed only for his well pump. I am installing a 200a service on the house with a main breaker outside at the meter. Can I install a 100amp meter beside the 200a meter and feed thru the top lugs ( the power company would have to do this) on the 200a meter over to feed the 100a meter? I really dont want to buy a 200a double meter base only to feed one 20a circuit to a well pump. Whats the best most economical way to do this? ANSWER: Robert Why would he need a separate meter? That is for the local power company to decide and the local electrical inspector. You can buy a small amperage meter to see what amps are being used if that is his intention. ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: My friend is building two 900 sq ft homes beside each other. He is planning on renting them out to tennants. He is going to provide water for both homes from one well pump. He will be paying for the well pump power, the tennants will pay the rest of the electricity to the homes. The pressure tank is in the basement of the first home. Thats the reason for the seperate meter. The power company and inspector dont really care as long as its done to code. The well head is behind the house in the woods about 150 ft. Not really feasible to have the power company run a seperate service to the well head, if I can just set a seperate 100a meter at the house service somehow. In my state all metering equipment is customer owned.
