What career should I go into with a business degree?

If one is planning to go for management consulting as his career, how does a degree in Engineering and post graduate in Business will help?

  • Answer:

I have a degree in engineering and an MBA. Frankly, once you have an MBA, you are definitely in the target market for Management Consulting firms, irrespective of what specific bachelors degree you had. How do these degrees help you in your career once you get recruited? Well the business degree helps quite a bit obviously. The engineering degree helps indirectly. Management consulting is a lot about structured problem solving on ambiguous problems - which engineers tend to both like (because it is structured) and hate (because it is often too ambiguous).

A technical undergraduate degree (any field but preferably from a top school) followed by an MBA is the best academic preparation for management consulting.
