What to do when you are frustrated and have no creative outlet?

Converting switch to outlet

  • I have an island in my kitchen with a one 2 socket outlet and a single switch in 1 quadbox on the side. The switch controls an outlet under the sink that has the garbage disposal plugged into it, and the outlet is always hot. I purchased one of those air switches for the garbage disposal, so I can remove the switch on the side of the island (bad with children). The air switch plugs into the outlet under the sink, then the garbage disposal plugs into the switch. Now that the switch is between the outlet and the garbage disposal, I don't need the switch on the side of the island, but do need the power to be constant in the outlet under the sink. What I would like to do is replace that switch with an outlet. The way is stands is that there are two black, two white, and two copper wires going into the box on the side of the island. One white, one black and one copper go to the outlet, and the other three to the switch. I believe the switch and outlet are on different circuits as well. I tried disconnecting the switch and hooking it up like the outlet next to it, but it didn't work. I have an idea of connecting the black and white from the switch to each other using a wire nut, then connecting the new outlet to the old outlet circuit, thus not using the switch wires for the new outlet and in theory leaving the outlet under the sink hot all the time due to the white being tied to the black. Please help, because I want to make sure that I do this safely and correctly.

  • Answer:

Clint, Twisting the black and white of the switch is correct, simply put on a wire nut and fold it up. Now having an outlet on the island in the kitchen is code also but it must be a GFI outlet so pick up a GFI put your feed wires on the LINE terminals it is written on the back of the GFI then strip a piece of wire about 8 inches long white ,black, and ground and put them on the LOAD terminals on the GFI it can be a regular outlet because the 1st GFI protects the other, i would pick up a decora style outlet just so it looks best they will both be rectangular, then pick up a 2 gang decora plate, Now under the sink you must change the outlet to a single, meaning only 1 place to plug in, that will make everything code Good luck! any problems just follow up with me.
