QUESTION: ok so i have looked up and read everything about this.... I bought the car from a neighbor..She was driving it just fine parked it for a month or two and then it wouldn't start... she had friends try to jump it to no avail... i checked the key and tried to bypass the ignition relay with the orange wire under the dash still had security light on ... then i noticed that the trunk wasnt closing on its own... so i went to a junk yard and bought a used closure motor... trunk closes and now the security light goes off but the starter still wont engage at all... please help thanx ANSWER: Hello, I really am nervous answering your question here because I don't know what you might have screwed up under the dash. It is not a good thing to try to fix something elelectrical or electronic under the dashvwithout exact instruction. You can literally get killed! All you need to do is short out the air bags and trying to start the car. You are dead! This 93 Cadillac is not a 56 Ford you can tinker with! Normally, I would tell you to call alarm stores in your area and request if they have a VATS bypass kit. If you find one that does, have the car towed there and have the bypass installed. In this case though, I am legitimately concerned for their safety because there is no knowing what you have done electrically. You tried to save money and like many guys, you figured you could fix the car without specific instruction- Wow! Now you have the security light on? I really don't know what to tell you, other than it sounds like you turned something real simple into something major. Normally, I volunteer my time giving free accurate information. In this case, since you did who knows what, to the car, I can walk you through all the needed repairs to this car, but it will not be cheap. I doubt if there is anyone competent that will touch this car now. I am sure you won't appreciate my answer here, oh well! If you are willing to pay to unscrew up the car, my email is [email protected]. Http:/www.autotheftexpert.com Is this answer clear enough? On the iphone I suppose sometimes my answers can be somewhat confusing. I am now on the computer. You car is filled with orange wires. Sometimes with different color stripes. IHAVE NEVER SAID TO CUT THE ORANGE WIRE_NEVER! If you actually read my writings I stated "two very small white wires" sometimes in an orange sheath. I have no idea of where you got that erroneous information about cutting an orange wire, but I can say if there are some idiots on the web stating to cut an orange wire, I can say with certainty, they don't have a clue as to what they are saying! Now, it is possible you misunderstood the information you read. Look, I am not trying to be condescending to you, but I have no clue as to what you did to this car. GM engineers with their all-knowing attitude used the security light to mean different things. It could relate to the optional factory installed alarm or ignition based VATS. Yes, I do know more than many engineers. I have had to reverse-engineer their fine products just to get a certain circuit to work. Yes, to you stupid opposing attorneys in spite of your arrogance, there are people like myself that actually know things without attending college! OK, now to your issue: That chip on the key blade is not a computer chip. It is a resistor. In 1993 GM used 14 different values for their resistors. There are 2 terminals or contacts in the ignition lock in the very front of the lock. If you look inside the ignition lock, you will see them. Once you insert the ignition key is inserted into the lock, the resistor completes the circuit because both contacts are connected with the resistor being in the middle. There is one thin white wire that runs up the column and one down that goes to the VATS module and then to the computer. If the correct resistor is interrogated and being correct, the engine will start and the fuel pump will run. The most common problem is that these thin wires will break inside the insulation at which point no voltage resistance or otherwise is going to the vats module. At which point the engine will not start. This concept was ok, but the design sucked!! Every time the lock rotated, the wires moved! What a piece of engineering garbage! What you need to do is measure the resistor on the key blade with an ohm meter. Once a value is established, you are allowed plus or minus variance. You could go to Radio shack, but it is easier to contact an alarm store for the VATS bypass kit, which comes with all the resistors and even a paper with the resistance values and GM's numbering system! They get these kits for free! They come in all alarms set up for remote start and these kits are not needed for anything but GM. Then you pull down the black plastic hush panel and under the dash you look at the bottom of the steering column. There is a clear plastic sheath you pull upward and now you have access to all the wires going up and down the column. You should see an orange sheathed unit at this area. That's your wires. At the bottom of the column bracket. Cut this sucker! Once cut pull the sheath off. Use a blue butt connector to attach the white wires you cut with the correct resistor in between. Tape tight to prevent it from coming apart. An end result will be you will have two thin white wires coming out of the column going no where. Reinstall the clear steering column sheath. Engine should start. Since older cars are stolen all the time and a screwdriver breaking the left side of that other engineering disaster the Saginaw column (at least for security) you need to install some form of starter kill (disable). My concern is the wiring damage or circuit damage you may have done previously. Please realize, I have rebuilt 10,000 steering columns, not including the thousands of dashes I have replaced! I can tell you any bolt or screw involved in a 1993 Cadillac! I may not remember each circuit, but the mechanicals I remember. I hope now you understand my answer and if you are wondering why I elaborated on GM engineers and that stupid attorney, I never do anything I don't prepare for. My responses are commonly read by opposing attorneys and I love to set them up! Good luck! http://www.autotheftexpert.com ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: i didnt just cut thany orange wire i removed the sheath on the orange wire that had the two small white wires as described... checked the key for a .98 reading on my ohm meter.. i then went to radio shack and bought a resistor pack and found one to read .91 and bridged it between the two white wires that went to under the dash not back up to the key cylinder... still no action from the starter at all... would like to reinerate i didnt just go cutting wires i found the specific one before cutting anything... any other possibilities??? thanks a bunch ANSWER: Hello, Sounds like you did the right thing now and now you need two people. You need to use the meter on the 12 volt scaled and place on the purple solenoid wire at the starter. You need someone else to put the ignition on start. Then you need to see if power is even getting to starter. If so, you have a bad starter. If you are not getting power, you could have a bad relay, neutral switch. Make sure you have a good connection on that resistor and the two white wires. Did you check for continuity between each side of the white wires? I only ask because I do not know what your mechanical skill is although you sound proficient. At least you know how to read an ohm meter. Better yet, you even have one. LOL http://www.autotheftexpert.com ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: One more question... The neutral switch... I heard it can be in two places one under the dash and two on the transmission!!! Not sure exactly what I am looking for!!

Answer:
Hi, Neutral switch should be under dash and on column towards firewall. There are 2 connectors. One flat 2 wire and another 2 wire with a clip. Be real careful because I don't want you breaking this switch off. It may not be easy to get to. Use my private email [email protected] because this thread is getting too long. If you are in the US I will give you a call if you give me your number. http://www.autotheftexpert.com
