Anyone ever read The Blind Watchmaker?

Can anyone help? I'm looking for a short story I read as an adolescent and don't remember the title or author. It's about a young black or Hispanic blind boy named Raymond whose grandmother makes him a wonderful yellow sweater. It has a heart-wrenching ending.

  • Raymond goes down his street, his arms held out to the sun, People laugh and call out hellos. He glows with this warmth. Years go by, his sweater gets too small for him, very raggy and full of holes. The arms end at his elbows instead of his wrists, and the fit is much too tight. One day he goes out and hears the laughter. Slowly he realizes all the people are laughing at him, not with him. Their laughter is derisive and full of scorn, and he is devastated.   I was reading the short stories of Shirley Jackson, O.Henry, and Guy de Maupassant at the time that I read this one and I thought it might be one of theirs because I'd read their stories over and over.       (By the way, if you haven't ever read or haven't read Shirley Jackson in a long time, you should really do it. In addition to The Lottery, her We Have Always Lived in the Castle is terrific. As are many others. Talk about a master of voice and tone, Shirley Jackson is way up there. (You can tell I re-read quite a number of her stories in my search.)       And she is particularly phenomenal because she's not "out-in-your-face" like Poe--who is a master--I'm not knocking him--but she's the opposite. The prose is deceptively simple as are the plots, and you don't know how you've ended up in horrorsville but you have. And--delicious--Woooo--creeepy!)   I read through the indexes of the complete works of all three authors and quite a few stories also. Yet I didn't find anything that could be this story.   I'd like to use this story as a reference for a story that I'm planning on writing as soon as I can find the Raymond story. (I am almost-absolutely sure that his name is Raymond, but not 100 pecent. The story may have been written using a different name within the same plot.) Any ideas on what resources I might use to track this down? (I've used different short-story sites and some reference materials at the library.)   I would so appreciate it if someone can help me.   Thanks.
