When To Take Prime Mango?

How do I take care of a baby mango tree as a house plant?

  • I've managed to get a mango seed to sprout and have a little seedling growing in a pot on my porch. I live in Southern California so it should be fine out there temperature-wise for a long time. However, if I want a bushy plant should I pinch off the initial leaves like you are supposed to do with avocados? How big should I let the plant grow before doing this? Also should I bring it in during the winter? it's rare for winter temperatures here to go substantially below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Answer:

As nice as our weather can be here in So.Cal.there are many nights when mangos can be damaged by the cold. Try bringing them in on the coldest nights. I would not pinch the leaves off at any time unless they looked bad.

Heavy Pruning of mango tree is not recommended, there's no sense of pinching off its leaves, it doesn't affect the plant. Although cut off the dead and undesired branches to control plant's growth and to make it bushier. Here's an interesting article I found on http://balconygardenweb.com/how-to-grow-mango-tree-in-pot/
