Answer:
There's two main techniques Derren uses to 'read minds'. Reading body language is one such technique. By asking someone to concentrate on what they are trying to conceal, they involuntarily give away cues that help identify what it actually is. Eye, hand movements, changes in intonation are all examples of body language that can help the mentalist to understand when they are close to the truth. The second and more insidious method is actually based on suggestion, ensuring the subject picks the correct number, colour, etc at the beginning and throughout the trick. Derren uses this technique quite a lot, especially in tricks involving participants correctly arriving at a large and seemingly random number matching one in a sealed, tamper-proof envelope. The best way to learn these techniques is start with reading the basics on Suggestion and Body Language (Wiipedia is a great reference for these) to get a general idea on how these work. Then armed with this, jump on YouTube and analyse how Derren and other mentalists perform their tricks. Very quickly, you'll start to take note of the language, gestures, and surroundings used to achieve certain results. Personally, I'd stay away from scammy sites like the one in the original question.

The technique is called "cold reading" and it is a tricky way of asking questions and its success depends on how gullible one is. Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_reading

One common way, which we all use, is guiding other peoples thoughts by the words we use and our body language. Writers call this a 'plant'. You plant an idea but don't follow it up immediately, then in the knowledge that the idea has been planted, say something that is related to the plant. If I was talking to you about your family, and then glanced at a picture momentarily, you might follow my gaze to the flower. Then I continue talking about your family. I then make a quick gaze at the picture. I know that you are thinking about the picture as you will pick up my interest. I could then say "You are thinking about that picture" and would be right. If someone has a bit of food on their face and you glance at it, the person will notice this and check their face automatically. Women are very concious of such actions. Much comedy writing is based on guiding peoples thoughts in a direction so that they assume something is going to be said, but something different is said.
