Is it possible to watch YouTube live stream events on Apple TV?

  • I'm wondering if the format used for live streaming events on YouTube (like the 10/03/12 debates) can be streamed onto an Apple TV.  Does the Apple TV YouTube app support this or can the stream on an iPhone be played on Apple TV?  I thought maybe this may not be possible since live video may not be able to be converted to mp4 format in real-time?

    When trying to display the event on Apple TV from my iPhone I received an error message from the Apple TV stating that the video stream couldn't be played. Though I still haven't tried using an HDMI adapter.

Last week's update of the Apple TV YouTube channel does now have a Live section. It's still early, but at the moment you can watch some otters, or downtown Sacramento's basketball stadium construction site.

You can stream them from a Mac or from an iOS device using AirPlay to AppleTV (see other answers I've written for more details). If you're on the Mac and you get an HDMI error, try using Chrome to play the video rather than Safari.
