Debunking: Is CrazyEgg's deceptive advertising grounds for a class-action lawsuit? CrazyEgg claims their mouse tracking solution collects "more than 88% of the data you would collect using classic eye tracking tools". This is clearly bullshit.

Elsewhere they've creatively interpreted the data with this statement "Carnegie Mellon Professor Reveals an 88% Correlation Between Mouse and Eye Movements." In fact the paper actually says "Among the regions that the eye gaze didn't visit, 88% of them were not visited by the mouse cursor either." For example, if there is some non-meaningful whitespace region in a no-manâs-land margin, there is a high chance that neither the mouse or eye will go there. Thatâs not at all the same as a 88% correlation on where they DO go. This is what it really looks like http://www.flickr.com/photos/max_hodges/10974430496/ The correlation could only be considered high if you are using a very course unit of measure for a âregionâ. Also to add to the dishonesty, the "professor" featured on their website is a stock photo image. seen elsewhere http://c-changeprogram.ca/ http://diabeteseducationpartners.org/html/HowWeHelp.html

Answer:
Maybe. I honestly don't care. It's a very useful tool, I use it all the time. I think it's a pretty essential tool for growth hackers, marketers and startups who are constantly testing different versions of their product. So whether they bent the truth a little is really of no consequence. Technically AirBnB and Uber are illegal depending on how the law is interpreted in different areas. But as long as they make people's lives easier or better it really doesn't matter.
